Title

Arm Chair- 5 slat, c.1760-1800

Description

This chair, circa 1760-1800, has 5 slats and is probably of Pennsylvanic origin. It is very similar to examples found in Pennsylvania, in fact, almost identical. If the chair demonstrated a weaker design, it might be Southern, but with the fine shaped slats, the turnings, and the well-developed feet, one can only say Pennsylvania. The chair has been badly stripped. The wood is maple and cherry. the seat is new.
2/2022 "38" stamped onto 3/8" metal piece attached to right back leg below seat. wood with rush seat, wooden pegs at top side of arm into leg post and at sides of back posts into arms and top of back post at the top rung. 2 rungs on each side of lower front and back legs and 1 between back legs. chair back rungs graduate in width from 2" at bottom to 3" at top. front leg post on rug are turned similar to matching chair except rung is not flattened at each side and feet are turned differently 3/8 " metal plate reads "51" located at back leg beneath seat.
