Title

Chair-5 slat, c. 1760-1800

Description

This chair, circa 1760-1800, has 5 slats and is probably of Pennsylvanic origin. It is very similar to examples found in Pennsylvania, in fact, almost identical. If the chair demonstrated a weaker design, it might be Southern, but with the fine shaped slats, the turnings, and the well-developed feet, one can only say Pennsylvania. The chair has been badly stripped. The wood is maple and cherry. the seat is new.
4/2023 5 rung back, woven rush seat, 2 rungs each side and 1 in back, 1 rung in middle front; turned with 2 bell shaped orbs separated by 1 flattened disk between. this rung is flattened at either side. front legs and feet have turned design. chair back rungs graduate in size-narrow at the bottom 1 5/8" and wider at top 2 7/8"
