Chairs-Ladderback (4), c. 1820
Dublin Core
Title
Chairs-Ladderback (4), c. 1820
Date
1820
Description
These four chairs, circa 1820, appear to be from the same chair maker. The turning on the finial of the ball with a ring to each side is unusual and apparently characteristic of this group. the way that the front legs extend above the split oak seat to an abnormal height suggests the function of keeping a cushion from sliding out of the chair. On the posts are additional turning marks intended for decoration and not only slat or ring placement. The slats are oak and the rings are hickory. The suggested peak in the middle of the slats is a nice touch as are the finials. These chairs are very nice and probably the products of a local or certainly Tennessee chairmaker. 2022: Ladderback chairs, A-painted bottom, B-painted, C-not painted (re-caned?), seat top stained, D-.
