Quilt #13-Feathered Star, c. 1840

Description

“Feathered star variation.” Quilt of scarlet calico and white. Scarlet calico which had been the best morning dress of Matilda Rechier, the great great great grandmother of Mrs. Clayton. Quilting done by Mrs. Gaines A Tyler who designed the quilting motifs. Seven months of work and 975 yards of thread were required. See: Knoxville New Sentinel article September 20, 1964 pages E six. This quilt top fabric is circa 1840. Its design of a star is perhaps a variation on the star of Bethlehem pattern. There is a plied fabric of red and gold. The border is a double line.
1/2023 Beige with red and floral sprig pattern pieces, beige back.
